Definition of Longitude
Longitude is a measurement of a point’s position on Earth in degrees, minutes, and seconds, measured east or west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is a line of longitude that passes through Greenwich, England, and is marked as 0° longitude.
Meridians are a term used interchangeably with lines of longitude. Longitude measurements enable us to determine a location’s specific location in the east-west direction with reference to the Prime Meridian. This measurement system is essential in determining time zones worldwide, navigation, and other geographic sciences. Longitude is a crucial element in satellite positioning systems, enabling global navigation and accurate location tracking.
