Aft refers to the section of a ship that is located towards the stern or rear. It is the opposite of the word “forward” which refers to the section of the ship found towards the bow or front. The aft section of a ship usually houses the steering controls, engines, and other machinery that powers the vessel. It is also where many crew members may have their cabins or quarters. Aft is an important term to understand when navigating a ship or communicating about its different sections.
