Ammeter

« Back to Glossary Index

Ammeter – An electrical instrument that is placed in series with an electrical load in order to measure the electrical current that is flowing through it. Unlike a voltmeter, which is used to measure electrical potential difference or voltage, an ammeter provides an accurate reading of the amount of current that is being consumed by a load. Typically designed with a low resistance shunt, an ammeter is installed in line with the load and can monitor a wide range of currents, from milliamperes to amperes. By measuring the electrical current, an ammeter can provide critical insights into the performance of a circuit and help to prevent damage to electrical devices or overload conditions. As a crucial component in electrical power distribution systems, ammeters are used in a wide range of applications, including industrial automation, marine engineering, and telecommunications.
