Compressor stall

« Back to Glossary Index

Compressor stall: An undesired state occurring in gas turbine engines’ axial-flow compressors, where one or more rotor blade stages fail to pass air smoothly to the succeeding stages, causing a disruption to the engine’s airflow. A compressor stall can be triggered by pressure ratios that do not match the engine rpm, resulting in exhaust temperature rise and rpm fluctuations. If left unchecked, a compressor stall can lead to complete engine failure and even physical damage.
