Confluence

« Back to Glossary Index

Confluence – The merging point of two or more bodies of flowing water, including rivers and streams, where they come together in a single location. This meeting point is also referred to as a conflux and represents the point of convergence where the individual streams or rivers lose their distinct identity and become a combined body of flowing water. The confluence is a critical juncture for aquatic ecosystems and provides vital habitats for many aquatic species. The merging of waters can also result in the formation of wetlands, deltas, and estuaries, which further enrich the biodiversity of the surrounding environment. In addition, the confluence of waterways has historically served as a strategic location for human settlements, maritime transportation, and trade. The study of confluences is multidisciplinary, including hydrology, ecology, geomorphology, and geography, making it an interesting area for scientific research and exploration.
