Definition of Continental Breakfast

A Continental Breakfast is typically a light meal served in hotels or restaurants, consisting of a variety of baked goods such as croissants, pastries, and bread, as well as spreads like butter, jam, and honey. Hot beverages like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are also usually included.

In addition to these basics, many Continental Breakfasts offer optional extras like eggs, cheese, meat, and cereal. These extra options give guests more variety and allow them to create a breakfast that suits their preferences.

Despite its name, the Continental Breakfast actually originated in England in the 19th century, as a way to cater to the needs of international travelers who were accustomed to lighter breakfasts than the traditional full English breakfast. Over time, the Continental Breakfast has evolved into a popular option worldwide, offering a convenient and satisfying way to start the day for travelers and locals alike.
