Disaster Tourism

« Back to Glossary Index

Disaster Tourism is a form of tourism where individuals intentionally visit areas that have experienced natural disasters, civil unrest or acts of violence. The primary purpose is to satisfy a curiosity about the aftermath of these events and to witness the destruction caused. Despite the potential dangers and ethical concerns associated with Disaster Tourism, this form of travel continues to attract individuals from around the world. Tourists are drawn by the opportunity to observe the consequences of disasters and the resilience of affected communities. However, it is important to consider the impact of such actions on the affected communities, as it could potentially hamper the recovery efforts and exploit the tragedy for personal gain. Disaster Tourism can raise awareness and empathy for disaster victims but must be conducted in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner.
