Definition of “Docent

A docent is a volunteer tour guide who provides educational and informative tours of museums or art galleries. They do not receive compensation for their work and donate their time to share their knowledge and passion for art and history with visitors.

Docents typically undergo extensive training in art history, the museum’s collection, and effective communication techniques to engage and educate visitors. They are knowledgeable about the exhibits and can provide contextual information, answer questions and offer insights into the artwork’s cultural significance for visitors.

In addition to conducting tours, docents may be involved in the development of exhibit materials, creating educational programs for school groups or other visitors. Their dedication and enthusiasm for art help to enhance the museum experience for visitors and promote an appreciation of art and culture.
