Definition of DR

DR, short for Dead Reckoning, is a navigational technique used by pilots and sailors to determine their current location based on their previous position, speed, and direction of travel. It involves taking a fix at a certain point in time, and then calculating future positions by keeping track of the distance traveled and using that along with speed and direction to extrapolate a new position. DR is a crucial tool in navigation, especially when electronic aids are not available or are unreliable due to external factors such as interference or malfunction. It requires a good understanding of navigational principles and accurate record-keeping to be effective, and thus is an essential skill for anyone engaged in long-distance travel over land or sea. So, DR is a method of determining the position of moving objects by using the latest known position, speed, and course.
