Flight Information Region (FIR) / Upper Information Region (UIR)

Flight Information Regions and Upper Information Regions represent defined geographical airspace areas under the responsibility of air traffic control authorities. The size of FIRs and UIRs is typically determined by the countries involved in overseeing air traffic within those regions. The classification of airspace as an Oceanic Information Region is also a distinct category denoting airspace over the oceans. FIRs and UIRs enable air traffic to be efficiently monitored and controlled, improving flight safety and minimizing the risk of collisions. These regions incorporate various navigational and communication systems, including air traffic control units and air navigation service providers. Within each FIR or UIR, designated air traffic control personnel direct traffic with the aid of radar and other technologies, working under strict protocols and regulations designed to maintain safe and efficient flight operations.
