Fog

« Back to Glossary Index

Fog is a meteorological phenomenon characterized by a thick cloud of tiny water droplets that form at or near Earth’s surface, resulting in reduced visibility. It is a type of cloud consisting of numerous minute water droplets, small enough to be suspended in the earth’s atmosphere indefinitely, unlike drizzle which falls to the surface. Fog differs from a cloud only in that a cloud is not based at the surface. It is usually distinguished from haze by its wetness and gray color. Fog can occur in different types, such as radiation fog, advection fog, and upslope fog, and is influenced by factors such as temperature, wind, and humidity.
