Definition of Foreign Object Damage (FOD)

Foreign object damage (FOD) refers to the damage caused to a gas turbine engine or other machinery by foreign objects that are sucked into the engine while it is running. These objects can be debris from runways or taxiways, and the ingestion of ice and birds during flight. FOD can cause serious damage to the engine, leading to unsafe conditions, flight cancellations, and costly repairs. Therefore, it is essential for operators and ground crew to follow proper FOD prevention procedures such as regularly inspecting runways, taxiways, and surrounding areas to remove any debris, using bird-scaring techniques, and educating individuals on proper FOD prevention practices. By implementing effective FOD prevention measures, the risk of engine damage and potential accidents can be significantly reduced.
