Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

« Back to Glossary Index

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the primary time standard used internationally. It is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, which is located on the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian serves as the reference line for the measurement of longitude. Therefore, GMT is used as the baseline for determining the time in all other time zones around the world. GMT is also closely related to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is a more precise time standard used for scientific and international purposes. While GMT was traditionally determined by the position of the Sun in the sky relative to Greenwich, it is now determined using atomic clocks to achieve greater accuracy. Thus, GMT remains vital in global navigation, timekeeping, and communication for international coordination and synchronization of activities.
