Definition of Hg

Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury, a silvery-white metal that is the only liquid metal at room temperature. The abbreviation is derived from the Latin word “hydrargyrum,” which means “liquid silver.” Mercury is a highly toxic element that is found naturally in the earth’s crust and can be released into the air, water, and soil through human activities such as burning fossil fuels and mining. It is widely used in thermometers, barometers, electrical switches, and other devices because of its unique physical and chemical properties. However, because of its toxicity, exposure to mercury can cause severe health problems, including damage to the nervous system, lungs, and kidneys. As a result, the use of mercury is heavily regulated in many countries and efforts are being made to phase out its use in certain applications.
