Histotoxic hypoxia

« Back to Glossary Index

Histotoxic Hypoxia: A condition characterized by the inability of body cells to effectively utilize oxygen despite sufficient supplies being transported to them. In this state, the tissues exhibit a diminished capacity to use the oxygen supplied by blood as a result of cellular damage or dysfunction. This type of hypoxia can be caused by the exposure to cyto-toxic substances, including alcohol, narcotics, carbon monoxide, and others that hinder cellular oxygen utilization. The condition can lead to severe cellular damage or death in different organs and tissues of the body. The symptoms may include confusion, headache, nausea, and rapid breathing, among others, depending on the extent and duration of hypoxia. Prompt medical attention and intervention are typically required to restore normal oxygenation of cells, thereby averting possible lethal consequences.
