Hot Start Definition

A “Hot start” refers to the unexpected starting of a gas turbine engine with an exhaust temperature that exceeds the prescribed limits. This typically occurs due to the presence of an excessively rich mixture within the combustor, leading to elevated temperatures and potential engine damage. Unlike a “cold start,” which initiates at low temperatures with minimal turbulence, a Hot Start is characterized by the normal rotation of the engine when the combustor mixture is ignited. Identifying and terminating fuel supply promptly is critical for preventing costly and potentially hazardous engine damage.
