Definition of Incident with Potential (IWP)

An Incident with Potential (IWP) is an aviation event that almost results in an accident but fortunately does not. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident indicate significant potential for substantial damage or serious injury. The classification of an IWP is determined by the USDA-FS National Aviation Safety and Training Manager or the OAS Aviation Safety, Training, Program Evaluations and Quality Management Chief. An IWP is a serious aviation event that requires investigation and analysis to identify the root cause and implement corrective actions to prevent similar incidents in the future. It is crucial to report IWPs promptly to the appropriate authorities to ensure that the aviation system operates safely and effectively.
