Isobars

« Back to Glossary Index

Isobars are lines that connect points of equal airborne pressure. These lines on a weather map help to identify areas of high and low pressure. Isobars can also allow for the prediction of wind speed and direction, as air moves from higher to lower pressure. They’re valuable tools for meteorologists and pilots in analyzing weather patterns and creating flight plans. By measuring the pressure gradient force between two points, isobars can aid in detecting and predicting the formation of various weather phenomena such as storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
