Leeward

« Back to Glossary Index

Leeward refers to the side of a ship, island or any other object that is sheltered or protected from the wind direction prevailing in that location. This area is located on the opposite side of the prevailing wind direction that blows over the object. For example, the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean are those islands that lie on the opposite side of the direction of the prevailing winds. These islands are protected from the strong winds and waves that travel across the Atlantic Ocean and are therefore a popular tourist destination for sailing enthusiasts. The Leeward side of an object is generally characterized by smooth and calm waters, ideal for swimming, surfing, and other water sports activities. In contrast, the Windward side of an object is exposed to the full force of the wind and the waves, making it a popular destination for windsurfing, kite surfing, and other wind-related water sports activities.
