Marker Beacon

A marker beacon is a short-range radio transmitter that emits a low-powered signal directed upward in a fan-shaped pattern. Typically used by pilots when approaching an airport for landing, marker beacons provide both audible and visual indications when the aircraft is in the vicinity of the facility. They help the pilot to determine the precise location of the aircraft by measuring the distance, direction, and altitude with respect to the airport’s runway. Marker beacons are an essential navigation aid that ensures safety and accuracy during landing approaches. They work by transmitting a coded signal that is received by the aircraft’s radio receiver and decoded by the onboard instruments. Once the signal is received, the instruments provide the pilot with information about the distance to the runway, the altitude of the aircraft, and where it is in relation to the landing approach path. Despite the widespread use of GPS and other advanced navigation systems, marker beacons remain an important aid to aviation safety, particularly in low-visibility conditions.
