Mesophere

« Back to Glossary Index

Mesophere: the atmospheric layer located directly above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere. This region extends from approximately 50 to 80 kilometers above the Earth’s surface and is characterized by decreasing temperatures with increasing altitude. The mesosphere is also where meteors burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere, creating bright streaks of light known as shooting stars. Additionally, this layer contains a small amount of ozone, which plays a role in controlling atmospheric chemistry. Due to its position and unique physical properties, the mesosphere is an important area of study for atmospheric scientists and researchers.
