Nautical Mile

« Back to Glossary Index

Nautical Mile: An air-sea distance measurement used primarily in marine and aviation navigation, equivalent to one minute of arc along any meridian on the earth’s surface. This distance is approximately 1.15 statute miles or 1.85 kilometers. The nautical mile is commonly used by sailors and pilots to navigate and determine their positions on maps and charts. It allows for greater accuracy in measuring distances over long distances, especially over water, where accurate measurements are essential for safety.
