Overboost

« Back to Glossary Index

Overboost is a state where the pressure in the manifold of a reciprocating engine exceeds the maximum limit established by the manufacturer. This can cause damage to engine components, particularly if the overboost condition is prolonged and exceeds the engine’s design parameters. Overboost can occur in turbocharged or supercharged engines when the boost pressure is increased beyond the safe limit. Engines that are overpowered or modified may be more likely to experience overboost, as their performance capabilities may exceed the designed limits. Monitoring engine boost pressure and avoiding prolonged overboost conditions are key to ensuring safe and reliable engine operation.
