Definition of Pilotage

Pilotage is a navigational technique that involves using visual reference to locate landmarks or other physical objects to determine the ship or boat’s position and course. This method is commonly used in shallow and confined waters or harbors, where the depth of water is uncertain, or where there can be multiple obstructions. Pilotage can be achieved with the help of charts and maps, but it mainly relies on the navigator’s experience, skills, and knowledge of the local waters. By observing landmarks, such as buoys, lighthouses, and beacons, the navigator can determine the vessel’s position, orient the chart, and plot a safe course. Although modern navigation systems, such as GPS, have made pilotage less critical, it remains an essential part of navigation in many areas and a skill every mariner should master.
