Prevailing visibility

« Back to Glossary Index

Prevailing visibility refers to the maximum horizontal distance that can be seen throughout at least half of the horizon circle. This distance may vary due to the atmospheric conditions and may not necessarily be continuous. Prevailing visibility is crucial for transportation safety, especially for air and sea traffic, as it determines the minimum visibility required for safe operations. It is often reported in weather forecasts and is measured using instruments such as visibility sensors and runway visual range equipment.
