What is a Quay?

A quay, pronounced as “key,” refers to a structure or platform built along the edge of a body of water, typically a river or harbor, for the docking and loading/unloading of ships or boats. It provides a space for ships to moor, usually by securing them with ropes or chains. Quays can vary in size, shape, and construction materials depending on their intended use and the size of the watercraft they accommodate. Some quays serve as tourist attractions, giving visitors a chance to get up close to the water and boats, while others have become industrial and commercial hubs for shipping and transportation.
