Definition of Rhodopsin

Rhodopsin is a photosensitive pigment that plays a crucial role in initiating the visual response in the rods of the eye. It is a protein that consists of a light-absorbing molecule called retinal and a protein component called opsin. When light enters the eye and strikes the retinal molecule, it undergoes a conformational change, which triggers a series of events leading to the activation of the visual signaling pathway.

Rhodopsin is mainly found in the rod cells of the retina, which are responsible for detecting low levels of light and shapes of objects in dim light conditions. In bright light, rhodopsin gets rapidly bleached, and the visual response shifts to the cone cells, which provide color vision and visual acuity.

Mutations in the rhodopsin gene can lead to retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, which can cause vision loss over time. Moreover, rhodopsin has been extensively studied as a model system for understanding the molecular basis of G protein-coupled receptor signaling, which has widespread implications in pharmacology and drug development.
