Definition of Safaris

Safaris are an environmentally and socially responsible form of travel that typically involves game viewing and spending time in wilderness areas such as game reserves and national parks. While traditional safaris had a heavy focus on seeing wildlife, modern safaris offer a wide range of adventures including bird-watching and sustainable tourism activities that benefit wildlife conservation efforts and local communities.

Safari companies have evolved to actively contribute to conservation projects and generate tourism revenue that is used to manage wildlife projects and game reserves. Visitors can encounter wildlife and help protect endangered species, rather than hunting them. Safaris also offer opportunities for cultural interactions with local communities that are respectful and benefit them through sustainable tourism, employment and financial gains from selling goods and services.

The negative hunting connotations of the word ‘safari’ are being rapidly replaced by the positive associations of responsible and sustainable tourism that make a difference in protecting wildlife and supporting local communities.
