Tourist tax

« Back to Glossary Index

Tourist tax – A fee imposed on visitors by a municipality that is usually paid through their accommodation provider. This fee is calculated based on the number of nights the traveler spends in the city. The purpose of the tourist tax is to help fund local infrastructure and services that are used by tourists, such as public transportation, maintenance of historical sites, and other amenities that appeal to visitors. The amount of the tax varies depending on the type of accommodation and the location of the municipality, and it is often bundled into the overall cost of the stay. Although typically a small percentage of the total cost of the trip, the tourist tax can have a significant impact on the budget of travelers, particularly those on a tight budget.
