Turbofan engine

« Back to Glossary Index

Turbofan engine: an advanced jet engine that generates additional thrust by diverting a portion of the incoming airflow around the combustion chamber and into a bypass channel. This engine design utilises the principles of both a traditional turbojet engine and a fuel-efficient turboprop. The fan at the front draws in air and compresses it, with some of the air passing through the combustion chamber to generate thrust, while the rest of the air is directed around the outside of the engine (bypass) and creates additional thrust. Turbofan engines offer several benefits, including reduced fuel consumption, lower noise levels and increased safety. They are commonly used on commercial airliners due to their high efficiency and reliability.
