Twenty-four hour time

« Back to Glossary Index

The Definition of Twenty-Four Hour Time: A time display system used in a majority of countries, where instead of using AM and PM, the 24-hour format is used, generally listed in schedules and timetables. In the Twenty-Four Hour Time format, 1 PM is represented as 1300 hours, 4 PM is represented as 1500 hours, and so on. The format goes up to 2359 (11:59 PM). Midnight is then considered as either 2400 or “zero” hours. 1:20 AM would then be represented as 0120 or “one hour, twenty minutes,” following a strict 24-hour cycle. This system allows for better precision and eliminates any confusion related to AM and PM designations. It is commonly used in military and aviation contexts, and although it is not as popular in the USA, it is still used by some organizations.
