Wide area augmentation system (WAAS)

WAAS is a sophisticated differential global positioning system (DGPS) that enhances the accuracy of the GPS by identifying the position error from the GPS satellites. It then corrects the error by transmitting the corrective factors to the airborne GPS receiver, resulting in improved positioning accuracy. The WAAS is a ground-based system that covers a vast area, providing an effective solution for users requiring high-precision navigation in regions beyond traditional GPS coverage. This complex technology, whereby ground reference stations throughout the coverage area gather GPS signal error measurements, then uplink to geosynchronous satellites which relay the data back to the user, allows pilots to fly more safely and precisely. In summary, WAAS provides pilots with better situational awareness and confidence in their navigation systems, leading to safer flights.
