Wind Tee definition
A Wind tee is a weather instrument that is commonly used at airports to determine the direction of wind. It is designed to resemble the shape of a capital letter “T”, with a vertical fin added to the center arm, creating a crude planform silhouette of an airplane. This feature allows pilots to easily identify it from afar and use it as a reference point when approaching the runway.
The Wind Tee works by allowing the wind to move freely through the horizontal arms of the device, which are attached to a pivot point located at the base. The vertical fin at the center helps to align the Tee with the wind direction, causing the arms to turn and point towards the wind. The angle of the arms provides pilots with an indicator of the wind direction and speed, which is crucial for takeoffs, landings, and taxiing.
The Wind Tee is essentially a simple and reliable wind direction measuring tool that is widely used in aviation. Its use is identical to that of a Tetrahedron, which is a similar instrument used to indicate wind direction and strength. Typically, Wind Tees are painted in yellow and black stripes to enhance their visibility and ensure they are easily seen by pilots.
