ADS-B

« Back to Glossary Index

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology is used for tracking aircraft. It uses automatic data transmission from the aircraft without pilot intervention and is dependent on the aircraft’s navigational system for position information. An ADS-B equipped aircraft with a transponder can transmit extensive flight details like call sign, altitude, and ground speed. It can also transmit additional information like airspeed, wind, and temperature in some cases. A global network of ADS-B receivers intercepts these transmissions to provide a unique flight tracking service.
