ailerons

« Back to Glossary Index

Ailerons are a type of control surface that are located on the trailing edge of an aircraft’s wings. These surfaces are responsible for generating asymmetric wing lift, which in turn helps the aircraft to control its roll. Ailerons operate in pairs on the outside of the wings and work in opposition to each other, such that when one aileron is raised, the other is lowered. Ailerons are considered primary flight control surfaces and are mounted near the tip of the wings.
