air force

« Back to Glossary Index

Air Force, the aerial warfare branch of a nation’s military focused on air-to-air combat, air-to-ground combat, and support operations for troops on the ground. Besides ensuring air supremacy through a combination of fighter aircraft, ground-based air defense systems, and early warning systems, the Air Force is also responsible for conducting surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence-gathering missions. It also provides aerial support to ground forces during land battles and aids in disaster relief operations. Developed from humble beginnings as an observer corps in the early 20th century, Air Forces have become an integral component of a nation’s military preparedness, equipped with cutting-edge technology and specialized personnel trained to carry out complex aerial operations.
