Airport surface detection equipment (ASDE)

« Back to Glossary Index

Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE) is a type of radar equipment that has been exclusively designed to detect all the key features and traffic present on the airport surface. The entire image of the detected features and traffic is presented on the control tower console. ASDE is primarily used to complement the visual observation carried out by the tower personnel of aircraft and/or vehicular movements on runways and taxiways. This equipment plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall safety and security standards of the airport by providing an additional layer of protection against potential hazards and risks.
