Alternate Static Source

An alternate static source is a backup system used to provide ambient air pressure readings in aircraft when the primary static vent malfunctions. The alternate static source provides a less accurate but usable measurement of the actual air pressure surrounding the aircraft. This is important for the instruments that rely on this data, such as the altimeter and vertical speed indicator, to provide accurate readings. The alternate static source is typically located in the cockpit and can be activated by the pilot in the event of a malfunctioning primary system. While not as accurate as the primary static vent, the alternate static source can provide valuable data to help ensure the safe operation of the aircraft.
