Definition of “Aneroid

An aneroid is a highly sensitive component that measures the absolute pressure of the air, commonly used in altimeters and barometers. The aneroid capsule is a sealed, flat structure composed of thin corrugated metal disks that have been soldered together and evacuated by removing all of the air. As the air pressure changes, the aneroid capsule flexes and contracts, and these movements are translated into changes in the position of the indicator needle on the instrument dial. This allows pilots, meteorologists, and others to accurately measure changes in altitude or atmospheric pressure. The aneroid capsule is a key part of many instruments that require precise and sensitive pressure measurements, and it has become an essential component of modern aviation and weather forecasting technology.
