Instrument Flying and Attitude Instrument Flying

Instrument flying is the operation of an aircraft by relying solely on information provided by instruments rather than using outside visual cues. This type of flying is essential for flight operations in low visibility conditions or at night. In contrast, attitude instrument flying involves maintaining the correct aircraft attitude based on instrument readings. It requires the pilot to comprehend and recognize the flight indications shown on the instruments regardless of ambient weather conditions or time of day. The aircraft’s configuration, speed, and altitude must all be closely monitored using cockpit instruments for successful flight operations. Attitude instrument flying skills are particularly critical in situations where weather conditions make outside visual references unreliable. Pilots who rely on attitude instrument flying need to undergo extensive training and pass exams to acquire the necessary certification to operate an aircraft in such conditions.
