Definition of Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS)

AWOS is an advanced weather reporting system that utilizes sensors, processors, computer-generated voice subsystems, and transmitters to broadcast weather data. It is an automated system designed for the purpose of collecting and disseminating real-time weather information to pilots, air traffic control towers, and other users. AWOS sites are equipped with sensors that measure wind speed, direction, temperature, pressure, and other meteorological parameters to generate comprehensive weather reports. Unlike its earlier version, the AWOS system has the ability to report density altitude, which helps pilots to determine aircraft performance at different elevations. However, AWOS sites are not capable of reporting precipitation. Overall, AWOS plays a vital role in ensuring aviation safety by providing accurate and timely weather information to pilots.
