available seat miles

« Back to Glossary Index

Available seat miles (ASMs) represent a metric used by airlines to measure their passenger carrying capacity. This metric is calculated by multiplying the number of seats on an aircraft by the distance flown in miles. An example would be a 100-seat airplane flying a distance of 100 miles, which would result in 10,000 ASMs. It is essential to note that seats that are not available for sale to revenue-paying passengers, such as those reserved for crew rest, are not included in the calculation. The sum of all the ASMs flown by an airline during a specified period represents the total distance their passengers could have flown based on the number of seats available. ASMs are a crucial factor in determining an airline’s capacity and ultimately its revenue potential.
