Definition of Barometric Altitude

Barometric altitude is the measurement of an aircraft’s height above Mean Sea Level, which is a constant value utilized in aviation and other industries. It is obtained through barometric pressure sensed by the aircraft’s transponder and reported in standard pressure of 1013.25 hPa (29.92 in Hg). However, the reported barometric altitude is not corrected for local pressure, and thus, it may not reflect the true altitude of the aircraft. Additionally, barometric altitude is not adjusted for local elevation, so it does not necessarily indicate the height of the aircraft above the ground. Despite these limitations, barometric altitude remains a valuable measure for ensuring safe navigation and operation of aircraft in various applications.
