Bumping

Bumping is a practice commonly used by airlines, where passengers with confirmed tickets for a specific flight are denied boarding due to the flight being oversold. In such cases, the carrier will typically request volunteers to take later flights, and may offer some form of compensation as a gesture of goodwill. Compensation can take the form of vouchers or tickets for future travel.

However, the rules surrounding when compensation must be provided differ between carriers, and can be complex. To obtain a better understanding of a particular carrier’s guidelines, it is advisable to request a copy of their rules from the ticket agent.

Overall, bumping can create inconvenience and disruption for passengers due to unexpected changes to travel itineraries. Nevertheless, it remains a common practice for airlines seeking to maximize profitability by managing their inventory of available seats.
