Definition of CDI

A CDI or Course Deviation Indicator is a device utilized in aviation navigation that displays the horizontal deviation of an aircraft from its intended course. The CDI is a critical component in an instrument landing system, providing guidance to a pilot as they precisely align their plane with the desired path. It functions by interpreting the signals transmitted from ground-based navigation systems or GPS satellites to exhibit a needle that moves left or right in proportion to the plane’s position relative to the correct course. By utilising the CDI, pilots can maintain accuracy and stability during flight, enhancing their navigation and safety.
