Critical areas

« Back to Glossary Index

Critical areas are zones in the vicinity of the localizer or glideslope antennas, where the operation of surface vehicles or aircraft may cause disruptions in the ILS localizer and glideslope courses. These areas represent a potential hazard to the safety of aircraft and require special attention from pilots and ground personnel. The size of the critical areas is determined by the type and configuration of the localizer and glideslope antennas, as well as the characteristics of the surrounding terrain. Factors such as visibility conditions, wind direction, and aircraft speed also play a role in determining the extent of the critical areas. It is essential that all personnel operating in or around critical areas are aware of the potential risks and take appropriate measures to ensure the safe operation of aircraft.
