Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)

DME is an electronic navigation system that uses radio signals to measure the distance between an aircraft and a ground station or waypoint. The system provides accurate distance information that is displayed on the instrument panel of the aircraft. DME consists of airborne and ground equipment that calculates the slant range distance of the aircraft from the DME navigation aid. This distance is then shown to the pilot, enabling them to navigate with greater precision.

DME technology is widely used in civilian aviation and provides an essential aid to pilots when flying in areas with limited visibility. It allows pilots to calculate their distance from a ground station or waypoint, improving safety and reducing navigation errors. TACAN is a military version of DME and is often used in conjunction with civilian facilities. With its reliable and accurate distance measurement capabilities, DME has become an indispensable tool in modern aviation.
