Definition of DRVSM

DRVSM stands for Domestic Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum. This term refers to the airspace in which aircraft can operate at a reduced vertical separation of only 1,000 feet instead of the standard of 2,000 feet. This reduction in vertical separation allows for increased efficiency of airspace and the ability to accommodate more flights. DRVSM is applied to domestic flights as opposed to international flights. The introduction of DRVSM has also resulted in increased safety measures, including more frequent monitoring of aircraft altitude and improved communication between pilots and air traffic controllers.
