Empty-Field Myopia Definition

Empty-field myopia is a form of induced nearsightedness that occurs as a result of flying at night, in instrument meteorological conditions, and/or reduced visibility. This type of nearsightedness is caused by the lack of visual stimuli available for the eyes to focus on. In situations where there is nothing to focus on, the eyes will automatically focus on a point just slightly ahead of the airplane. As a result, the pilot’s vision can become distorted, making it difficult to accurately judge distances and observe objects around the aircraft. Empty-field myopia is a common issue among pilots who regularly fly in nighttime or low visibility conditions. It is important for pilots to be aware of this condition and take steps to prevent it from affecting their ability to fly safely.
