Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS)

Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) is an aircraft safety device that alerts the flight crew when the aircraft is in potential danger of colliding with the terrain. The system uses radar or radio altimeter to measure the distance from the ground and compares it with the aircraft’s altitude and speed to determine if it is flying too low or descending too rapidly. If the system detects a possible collision, it triggers an audible and visual alarm to warn the pilots to take corrective action. GPWS is a crucial safety feature that helps to prevent accidents caused by controlled or uncontrolled flight into terrain, which can occur due to human error, system malfunction, or other factors.
